Writers Theatre of New Jersey
Recently, I was in touch with Writers Theatre of New Jersey to add their summer camps and programs to my post on Summer Camps: The Arts. I had heard of the group, and seen the sign for their offices at the Civic Center along Walnut Street as I walked my kids to school each day, but I really didn't know much about this little gem that is based right here in Madison. Since my daughter (age 8) is passionate about being on stage (mostly musical theater at the moment), I am starting to explore this new (to me!) genre.
This summer, Writers Theatre of New Jersey offers an amazing variety of theatre camps and two free productions.
Summer Classes/Camps:Through their Creative Acts Academy, WTNJ offers one- and two-week sessions from 9:30am-12:30pm from July 31 through September 1. (One-week sessions are $150; Two-week sessions are $250.) Each class is geared toward a specific age range from age 6 through 18. Classes include Playmakers, Performance (Acting), Playwriting, Improvisation, Acting Workshop, and Musical Performance. For the schedule and more information, visit https://www.wtnj.org/creative-acts-academy-summer-2017/
Free Summer Shows: Did that intro just say "free"? Yes! Incredibly, in partnership with the Madison Recreation Department, Writers Theatre of New Jersey runs two free Summer Youth Theatre productions open to all Madison-area residents. The emphasis of the experience is on the creative process, collaboration, and professional craft. The participants are treated like professionals and are expected to treat the work and their responsibilities in it as such. Rehearsals for both shows will be at the Madison Civic Center until they move to the Directing Lab at the Dorothy Young Center for the Arts at Drew University in a partnership with the Drew Theatre Department. For details on both shows, visit www.wtnj.org/madison-summer-recreation-shows/
