Rose and the Lost Princess (book tour)

Disclosure: I was provided an e-book for review, and a copy to giveaway. All opinions are my own.

Rose and the Lost Princess was written by Holly Webb.  It is the sequel to Rose.  The 4 book series was previously released in the UK... and I'm so excited about the re-release here in the US.

About the book:

Set in the British countryside and featuring an orphaned ward apprenticed to a magician, this youthful story is a delightful mix of Downton Abbey and Harry Potter.

Rose’s whole life has changed in a matter of weeks. She’s gone from being a lonely orphan to a magician’s apprentice, though she’s learned that power comes at a price. Even Rose’s friends don’t seem to trust her anymore, especially when rumors of dark magic begin to swirl through the city.

Then the country’s beloved princess vanishes, and the king asks Rose for her help. She must find the missing princess and put a stop to the evil magician behind the kidnapping… before all is lost.

My review:

I know everyone says not to judge the book by the cover... but you can TOTALLY judge this book by it's cover.  It's so perfect.  Right down to the shimmer of the pink for Rose's name.  (The pic above doesn't do justice to how magical the cover looks.)  And that is SO SO SO perfectly Rose!  From her big curious but nervous eyes and her slightly flush cheeks to her slight build.  Absolutely how I picture her.  Rose is such a lovable character from the very start.  You can't help but root for her and want to stick up for her when anyone is anything less than nice to her.  And the supporting characters are just as fully built up as Rose.  As Rose meets new people you really get a sense of who they are.  I find myself wanting to go back and read more about her friends Bill, and Freddie, and even snobby Isabella.  (Make me love your characters... and I love your books.)

I was so thrilled to read the first 2 Rose books.  I get especially excited when I read something and can't stop thinking "Oh... Zoe is going to LOVE this!"  Zoe really seems to enjoy a book that has mystery.  Like the Harry Potter books (which Zoe is currently reading) Rose and her friends spend the length of the book trying to solve a mystery.  In this book, it's obviously finding out who has taken the lost princess and saving her to return to her home.  I have no doubt that Holly Webb will be one of Zoe's favorite authors very soon.  And the fact that she's written over 70 books (I counted 76) means whenever Zoe tells me she can't figure out what to read I'll know right where to point her!

Meet Holly Webb:

Holly was born and grew up in southeast London but spent a lot of time on the Suffolk coast. As a child, she had two dogs, a cat, and at one point, nine gerbils (an accident). At about ten, Holly fell in love with stories from Ancient Greek myths, which led to studying university. She worked for five years as a children’s fiction editor before deciding that writing was more fun and easier to do from a sofa. Now living in Reading with her husband, three sons, and two cats, Holly runs a Guide unit. The Rose books stem from a childhood love of historical novels and the wish that animals really could talk.
