Fairleigh Dickinson (Florham) Public Events

I recently saw a post from an FDU junior on the Madison Area Parents and Community Facebook page. She wrote that over her years at FDU, she has seen a lack of community involvement, so she wanted to help spread the word about public events. I definitely agree! Over the 14 years we have lived in Madison, we’ve been to a handful of sport, art, theater, and community events at the local colleges, but we usually just hear about them from various sources rather than look them out ourselves. With three colleges in the Madison area—Fairleigh Dickinson (Florham), Drew, and St. Elizabeth—we are so fortunate to have an endless amount and variety of events right (almost) at our doorstep. I’ve now bookmarked the colleges’ calendars, and plan to check them regularly for events we can go to, either as a family or just us adults.

This week, I will focus on the events and resources at Fairleigh Dickinson (Florham). In the coming weeks, I will do the same for Drew University and College of St. Elizabeth.

FDU Public Events

The Main Stage, Dreyfuss Theater: For just $15 ($10 for seniors), you can catch a high-quality live theater show at the Main Stage, Dreyfuss Theater! This weekend is the final shows for the first production of the year—Avenue Q. (Shows are Friday, Oct 26 and Saturday, Oct 27 at 8pm, Sunday, Oct 28 at 2:30pm.) In December, students will perform Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure. In late March/early April, the show will be The Full Monty. A fourth production in May will be announced soon.

The Barn Black Box Theater: FDU also has a smaller, more intimate newly-renovated theater venue, The Barn Black Box Theater, adjacent to the Public Safety Office by the train tracks. Tickets are also $15/$10. In late November/early December, the show will be Neil Simon’s The Odd Couple (Female Version); the early March production will be a new tragicomedy In Real Life; the mid-April production will be Fairleigh Musical! Also, mark your calendars for a new play specifically commissioned for the FDU student theater community in April, 2020.

Public Affairs Lecture Series (PALS) Each fall, PALS offers a dozen lectures by nationally and internationally renowned speakers on major issues in domestic and international affairs. Lectures take place in the Bickford Theater at the Morris Museum.

WAMFest This annual series in the fall features readings, interviews, talks, installations, and performances hosted by FDU. It brings successful professional and celebrity artists of various art genres to the Florham Campus to inspire and inform students and the community. All the events are free and open to the public.

My friend’s son plays on the FDU soccer team, so we’ve been to several games. It is pretty neat to see such high-level play so close to home. It is especially fun for kids to watch these older kids play—and much cheaper than taking them to a professional game (especially when young kids don’t know the difference!). It’s also fun to take a whole team to watch together. The Fairleigh Dickinson Florham Campus is an NCAA Division III school. Their mascot is the Devils. (The Teaneck mascot is the Knights.)

The men's teams include baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, lacrosse, soccer, swimming, and tennis.

The women’s teams include basketball, cross country, field hockey, golf, lacrosse, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, and volleyball.

Check out the game schedules here.
