We were very excited to get a peek at the store before their grand opening... and really interested to see what one of our own local interior decorators, Amanda Benjamin (The Decorator's Daughter) had to say about the new World Market shopping experience and purchases!
A Visit to World Market; Conquering New Territory:
Hi, I’m Amanda and I’m a Decorator, Mom and a really great shopper (if I do say so myself). When Colleen asked me do a guest contribution to her blog which involved decorating and shopping, it was a no-brainer. The best part was that the shopping would be at a store that I have not had much experience with: World Market.
With my lovely $250 World Market gift card burning up my hand, I ventured off to their latest and greatest new store in Paramus, NJ. I went in expecting that I probably wouldn’t get too much for this amount (how wrong I was), but I reminded myself that I am a pretty damned savvy consumer.
What greeted me at the entrance was a selection of deliciously colorful garden stools that immediately called my name. A turquoise Moroccan style one jumped into my cart immediately. Good start and not even inside of the store yet.
The first department I hit was Kitchen wares, which was impressive. The glassware and dishes were all really cute and affordable. I especially loved the dish towels in Indian inspired prints. So much fun!
Next, on to dining furniture. I made a mental note that if/when I have a client in need of a dining table and chairs on a budget- this was the place. The styling was right on point (think Pottery Barn and Serena and Lily), but for a fraction of the price. The French Bistro chairs totally spoke to me and I will find a way to use them somewhere, someday, somehow…
I realized when I got to lighting that I have a sad corner in my turquoise and orange office that could really use some light and love. A gold lamp was the perfect (and shockingly inexpensive) solution for the space, but it needed something to sit on. A beautiful faux agate accent table was the obvious answer. At $99, this was a bit of a splurge- 40% of my budget. Eeek! However in the real, non-World-Market world, that is mere pocket change. I could get used to this place!
The final touch would need to be pillows for the 2 side chairs that currently live in my space. I happened upon some turquoise lumbar pillows that I knew would be perfect. On the way, I noticed the fantastic rug options which I didn’t need one at the moment, but this went on the mental Pinterest board as well.
I really couldn’t resist the picture frame department (who can?), which was full of very cute frames for very cute prices! A chunky, faux horn frame for $12.99!? Really?? Are you kidding me World Market? Naturally that fell into my cart, and then I cut myself off from this binge of shopping ecstasy.
Off to the register and not quite sure where I would end up, I noticed some really yummy Indian print tunics. Luckily the one I wanted wasn’t there in my size, or I would probably blow up my gift card.
The moment of truth arrived when I discover that my total decimation of the store came to a total of $280. That’s only $30 over budget, not bad for the amount of damage I did.
My sad office corner is now happy and warm, with the new World Market items in their new home. World Market will definitely be on my rotation, now and I can’t wait to go back!
