The New World was written by Patrick Ness.  It is an extremely short story (about 23 pages), and is a prequel to the Chaos Walking Trilogy.

Description from Amazon:

In this dramatic short story -- a prequel to the award-winning Chaos Walking Trilogy -- author Patrick Ness gives us the story of Viola's journey to the New World. Whether you're new to Chaos Walking or an established fan, this prequel serves as a fascinating introduction to the series that Publishers Weekly called "one of the most important works of young adult science fiction in recent years."

I downloaded The New World to my Kindle when it came up on a list of free Kindle books I subscribe to.  I read it first, before starting the trilogy.  I assumed that's when you should read a "prequel"... although Patrick Ness suggests reading it AFTER The Knife of Letting Go (the trilogy, book 1).  Who knew?

In brief, The New World is the story of how Viola (a young girl) and her parents crash land on the new world.  Since the story is under 25 pages, it's hard to tell much without spoiling it all.  I can tell you it left me wanting to know what would happen to Viola.  I'm glad I read it first.  (FYI... from what I can tell... it tended to have better reviews from people who read it before the trilogy than from people who read it after book 1).
