Outdoor Summer Concerts
One of my favorite things about summer in Madison is the abundance of outdoor music. Nothing says summer like packing your lawn chair and a picnic dinner, parking yourself on the grass, and listening to local bands, or, in some cases, full symphonies. Check out the variety of outdoor music concerts throughout the summer most days a week within a 15 minute drive of Madison, most of which are totally free:
Giralda Music & Arts Festival featuring the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra Sponsored by Morris Arts Giralda Farms, Madison Sunday, June 24, 2018, Gates open at 4pm for picnicking, Concert starts at 6pm
Advanced tickets: $15 adults, $4 for 12 and under, free for under age 4; Day of event: $20 adults, $5 for 12 and under.
For general information, check out my blog from last June here. Basically, you take your picnic (dinner, wine, whatever) and lawn chairs, and listen to the New Jersey Symphony playas the kids run around, and everyone has fun! Last year, we made a baseball-themed picnic, asked to be judged by the committee, and ended up winning fifth place! We got a bunch of free tickets to museums and theaters in Morris County, a mug, and an ornament. Fun family-friendly event!
Madison Downtown Concert Series featuring local bands Sponsored by Madison Downtown Development Commission and the Museum of Early Trades and Crafts On the lawn of the Museum of Early Trades and Crafts, 9 Main Street, Madison Six concerts held various Fridays from June-September. From 6pm-8pm Free
I vividly remember going to these concerts when the kids were young, in, what I think were the early years of this great concert series. We'd bring out the lawn chairs and picnic blankets, the kids would color the sidewalks with chalk, and we'd all enjoy the sounds of local bands. Becca would always dance around with an adorable little blond girl while the girl's mom and I would chat. Flash forward 6 years, and Becca and this girl are now big buddies and have been for the past 5 years since officially meeting at CAS kindergarten, her school's guidance counselor and a fifth grade teacher's husband plays in one band, and another of the bands features another good friend's parents! I love how homegrown this concert series is--mostly Madison folks playing for us all to enjoy!
